遵循植物演化生物学的思想，从生命科学和环境科学两个方面，研究陆地植物起源演化及其与全球环境变迁的相关关系。长期以来，通过研究植物演化过程中处于重要环节的类群，整体重建重要的绝灭类群，恢复植物演化序列，揭示其演化机制和规律；同时获取生物演化事件和化石植物富含的环境和气候信息，从生物学角度认识环境演变过程和规律，认识史前自然灾难，在长时间尺度上探索和理解全球变化趋势。

已发表研究论文70多篇（其中约30篇发表在《美国植物学报》，英国《林奈植物学报》，《加拿大植物学报》，英国《古生物学报》，荷兰《古植物学和孢粉学评论》，德国《古生物图鉴》等国际SCI刊物上），专著2部，编著6部，论文被广泛引用，包括被90年代美国教科书大量引用。
